Chelsea defender seriously considering a move to Spain, Barcelona interested

The summer transfer window may still be some way away, but the rumour mill continues to be abuzz with stories. And a particular one that has been doing the round for quite some time now is that of Barcelona being interested in Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta.

The 32-year-old versatile defender is in the final few months of his contract with the reigning European and World champions. And, according to a fresh report from The Times, he is seriously considering the prospect of returning to his homeland, Spain, with Barça interested.

Azpilicueta will soon be completing ten years at Chelsea and is a revered figure at the club. While the Blues would want him to extend his stay at Stamford Bridge, the ex-Marseille ace is yet to hold formal talks regarding a contract with the London giants.

The Spanish international has won everything there is to be at club football with Chelsea, following their FIFA Club World Cup triumph earlier this month. He has won two UEFA Europa League trophies, two Premier League titles, a League Cup, an FA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup as well.

So, the report states that in case he does decide the time is right for him to move on to the next chapter in his career, it will be with the blessing of the club. And, Barcelona are interested in securing his services for the next season.

The Catalan giants will need a new right-back in the summer as Dani Alves’ contract will be expiring soon, while Sergino Dest is expected to be sold. Someone of Azpilicueta’s age, experience and leadership would be a fine addition, even if it would only be for a short term.

Reports have claimed that the Blaugrana have already made a contract offer for the veteran star and an agreement is all but tied up. If true, it will be a shrewd piece of business for Xavi Hernandez & co.
